If gasoline consumption figures are any indication, Americans’ love affair with their cars is a relationship badly in need of some boundaries.
California drivers collectively consume more than 15 billion gallons of gasoline a year, and the United States as a whole more than 133 billion gallons. The U.S. consumption dwarfs than of any other country, even when compared to those that have larger populations and/or land mass.

[…] We all know that there’s no way around it, high gas prices in California are just part of California livin’. And in the Bay Area they’re near the highest record-breaking prices in the nation. Too bad, huh? Anyway. So those guys were complaining about the high local and state taxes imposed on California’s gasoline. For CA state alone, the tax is something like 24 cents per gallon. That’s almost 10% of the gasoline per gallon cost here, so when you add it all up, some millions of dollars flows into California coffers everyday(a rate of about 16B gallons/365 days X 10%, according to CaliforniaConnected), just from the gasoline that you buy to keep yourself running around town.
