Problem Gambling

It’s been just five years since Californians approved Vegas-style gambling on tribal lands, and the state’s gaming industry has quickly become one of the most profitable in the world.

But there are surely losers as well as winners in this casino boom. Some critics argue that public officials have largely ignored one of the most devastating by-products of Indian gaming: compulsive gambling.

We visit the Coachella Valley–home to one of the densest clusters of gambling halls in the state–to see how this community is dealing with the issue.
