Throughout much of its history, rural California has lacked the wherewithall to make its presence felt in the state legislature.
But in 2003, a rural caucus was formed to address policy issues and concerns of rural areas and communities. Today, with over 42 members — a third of the total number of legislators — the rural caucus is beginning to get some traction.
We talk with the Chair and Vice Chair of the rural caucus, Assemblyman Michael N. Villines (R-Clovis) and Assemblyman Juan Arambula (D-Fresno) about the boom to their populations and the importance of rural communities to the state’s present and future.
An earlier version of this story first aired September 9, 2005.
