In 2002, California passed a law to help educate pet owners about their animals, making it the only state requiring pet stores to provide instructions with any animal sold.
A representative from the Doris Day Animal League says law SB 1357 was inspired by the mistreatment of exotic pets. Apparently, reports of boys setting tarantulas on girls and baby alligators swimming down toilet pipes spurred activists into action.
