How common are local recalls? Between 1997 and 2001, there were 110 recall attempts in California on the local level (city, county, and school districts). 81 were successful.
Supporters of the recall process argue that it provides a way for citizens to retain control over elected officials. Opponents maintain that recall elections actually weaken the independence of elected officials, by not giving them a chance to do their jobs.
In “Recall Town”, we take a look at a small community in Northern California, where citizens certainly keep a very close eye on their officials. There have been no less than eight recall attempts in the past decade or so.
